Review of Twewy dilogy. Part II – Neo: The World ends with you
Neo: The World ends with you is a sequel of The World ends with you in 2007. The first part was a finished work and did not need to. However, in 2018, Square Enix released a reprint of this game with a new episode directly indicating the sequel, and in 2021 – anime adaptation (which we will talk about the next time). Neo Twewy is a continuation that no one needed, but at the same time it is a great game.
In general, before passing the sequel, I strongly recommend that you familiarize yourself with the original. And it is desirable – it is with the game, and not the anime of the same name, what to get the maximum of emotions from passing. The fan service here is very, very good: the authors understand that you know all the main characters, who they are and what they did. Therefore, they play in every way with your expectations, preparing for the appearance of a character. In this review, I decided not to avoid large plot spoilers and make out the whole game as detailed as possible, so I advise you to get acquainted with Neo: Twewy before reading.
To begin with, I will say that the plot is not perfect. There are elements in it that I did not like, but in general, the story left a very, very positive impression.
The main concept remained the same: the heroes fall into Underground, the game of the reapers, and begin to understand it. But in details there really has changed a lot. Now in the game the players are united not into couples, but into entire teams, and in the same way they perform tasks from the Reapers. Moreover, here the players fall into Underground alive, that is, they did not die before.
The game also consists of three weeks, but the most interesting, as in the first part, begins to occur only in the last third of the game. This is not to say that the first two weeks are boring and dull, just against the background of the third they fade. Why is it really worth praising the scriptwriters is for intrigue. In the very first days, they throw several story fishing rods for the future at once, and therefore it becomes really interesting to play. Moreover, the characters from the original Twewy, who give advice to our heroes or join the team, often look at the light.
And I was glad to see the old characters. All of them remained in their own images, so some jokes here stretch from the first part. I especially want to note Uzuki Yashiro and Koki Karia, which appear more than once to help Rindo and his friends. But the most interesting thing was the final in which almost all the heroes from Twewy appeared, including Joshua. Epic at these moments simply went off scale, and the subsequent final battle with the boss only fixed it. The heroes, although slightly, have changed, went through a lot, and it was really interesting to follow the same dialogue between Joshua and Neca.
To begin with, let’s deal with the plot “bridge”, which was added to the reprint of The World Ends with You for Nintendo Switch.
This small episode is a direct prequel to the events of NEO: Twewy. Minomoto is again resurrected in it, and also shows the destruction of Shinjuke, which is the starting point for the events of the sequel. Also, a character named Coco appears in it, which will be important for the events of the sequel and which in this episode lured Neku and the bat in a small adventure. As a result, it turns out that this episode does not bring so much new to the plot, but at the same time, at a certain stage of passing Neo, it will not be clear to you what kind of character is and what the heroes are talking about.
Changes in the game in Sibua are argued by events that remained in the background and about which we learn from the reapers. In another area of Tokyo, Sinjuke, neighboring Tokyo, there was about the same story as in The World Ends with You, with only one small nuance: Shinjuk did not have his NECU, which would prove the value of human emotions to the composer. Therefore, the entire area was completely destroyed by an executor (at the request of the composer, of course), and all the reapers asked the neighbors to shelter them. Gradually, the orders in Sibua with the advent of new persons (including the executor with whom Joshua made a deal) began to change.
We’ll deal with the executor: who is it and why it was not in the first part? As I understand it, this is a person responsible for erasing areas whose services are used by composers. He was called by Khaz, composer Shinjuke, to erase his area, and he would probably have caused Joshua if he had not changed his opinion about Sibu. In Neo: Twewy, the executor was not enough for the destruction of one area, but he decided to take up Sibyu. Joshua concluded an agreement with him, because he wanted to show Khaza, which is so beautiful Sybuy and show why he did not erase her in the final of the first part. As a result of an executor, Haz erases as soon as the situation approached the peak of its danger.
Now – about the main plot. It concentrates on two friends, Rindo and Fret, to which other players soon join (and not only). Soon they form a team called “Wicked Twisters” and begin confrontation with other teams. The leader of each of them is important for the plot and has a really interesting character (but more on that later, when we get to the character). The main goal is to defeat the Ruinbringers team, which occupied the first place and, instead of returning to the real world, continues the game. Then the game is overgrown with interesting details that make it more interesting and more exciting.
The authors were really good for the authors. She is closely intertwined with the fan service, and therefore it becomes more interesting and interesting to play – the peak occurs at 3 weeks, when all cards are already starting to gradually disclose us. You can talk as much as you like about the ambiguity of the NEO scenario: Twewy, but I can’t say that I was not interested in playing.
The story itself in Neo: Twewy has become larger: there are more heroes, more unexpected turns and more events in general. Along with this, some problems that cannot be ignored have come to the script.
The first of them is in dialogs. They are mostly amazing, they are interesting to read, but some seem meaningless. There are very few such dialogs, but still they are. At such moments, it seems that the heroes simply have nothing to talk about, and they stretch time.
Another problem is the pace of the game. The first weeks go at a relatively normal pace, and the latter sharply accelerates it, and well, a lot of events fit in it. Therefore, it seems to me that some of them were clearly necessary to transfer to previous weeks so as not to violate the pace.
Characters in Neo: Twewy, as in the original game, play a very important role. I will not disassemble each hero separately, but I still want to discuss the central.
The main character Neo: Twewy is undoubtedly Rindo Canada https://independentcasinosites.co.uk/ – an uncertain teenager who is fond of Fan GO mobile game. Compared to NEKU, of course, he does not stand out so much, but he also has his conflict. As in the original game, the protagonist is still an antagonist, that is, he fights himself. Unlike Twewy, it is much easier to notice here: it was Rindo by his actions that almost destroyed Sibuya.
Rindo conflict can not be seen immediately. It consists in the fact that Rindo is not confident in himself and depends on others. This can be seen in opening, more precisely, in the song “New Game”, which consists of several tracks of the game. This shows the incompetence of the rindo. Then, throughout the game, the characters mention several times the inability of the hero to make decisions. And this will pursue his whole game, including in the form of leaders of the Sibui teams. Each of which (except Cannon, probably) personifies some negative character trait of the rindo. And if you return to the soundtrack, then in “World Is Yours”, the track, sounding during the final battle with the boss, there are no other compositions, which symbolizes the internal growth of the rindo.
Unlike Neca, Rindo begins his journey in undergrand not one, but with his friend, Tosai Furezova or, as everyone calls him, Fret. At first, I wanted to christen it with the local Junpeem from Persona 3, but this is not so (although some parallels can still be drawn). He jokes decently, but it is almost always to the place and does not annoy. Moreover, due to the fact that they and Rindo from the very beginning together, you really believe in their friendship, and they will help each other more than once during the plot.
Fret also has a dramatic line that begins in the last third. He will suddenly become more serious, tells about his friend, who no longer (I remind you, Neku in the original Twewy did the same), and in addition, the leader of one of the teams, Canon, to which Fret was a certain sympathy, is tragically dies, and for the success of the whole team he needs to accept the inevitable. I like this line, but its main problem is that we see only a more dramatic halt in the last third, before this was not in his behavior. In my opinion, it was necessary to bring his story arch to this peak more smoothly, leaving hints in replicas and in his behavior at some points.
It’s not possible to say much about Nagi Usui: she is on the plot of Neo: Twewy. She madly loves a certain game called “Elegant Strategy” (abbreviated Elestra) and especially the character with the name Thomons. She also carries a backpack with her, almost completely hung with badges in this game. For the Rindo team, it is useful for the fact that it can “dive” into the minds of other people, so that, together with other members of the team, cleanse it from noise (a significant part of the sidelines are tied on this mechanics).
Personally, I am very sorry that so little was told about Nagi. She could have a really interesting backstory, telling, for example, about her loneliness and the only joy in life – Elegant Strategy, but, unfortunately, Nagi is remembered much less than the rest of the characters.
But who is really well registered, is Sakurana’s shock – a girl -girl, along with other Relays from Shinjuke, who moved to Sibyu. In the very first days, Rindo and Frett are found with her, and at first it seems that the shock plays the role of Uzuki from the first part, but it soon turns out that this is not so. Throughout the game, its character will develop. Moreover, her dramatic line, unlike the Fret line, is not taken out of nowhere, because shock and up to the last third doubts the correctness of the actions of his colleague-ghosts. There are certainly feelings between her and the Rindo, but not as strong as between Neku and Shiki (although, probably, this is also done to compare relations between adolescents in the 2000s and 2020s). And if the rest of the characters that I talked about above are still in question, then you definitely remember shock, both in appearance and in nature.
Now – about “old” characters. Bit and Neku are given the most attention: at some point, they join Rindo and his team and take an active part in the plot. The bit has not changed much, except in appearance: this is the same bit that we remembered him on Twewy, even some jokes associated with it came from the first part and received a continuation in Neo: Twewy.
But the Neku line is much more interesting. In fact, his completely completed line from the original Twewy to New Day and then in Neo: Twewy extended. And I have nothing against such an extension: it is very organically wealed in the history of Neku and Shiki. It turned out a story that is similar in the concept of the Homeric “Odyssey”, which gives the meeting Neku and Shiki in the Neo Twewy finals is more significance. Most of the old heroes, I was glad to see Neku, his interaction with the bat and other heroes, especially with Joshua.
I also want to talk about Minomoto separately. One of the most memorable and mysterious characters on Twewy in the sequel appears almost at the very beginning, and then mysteriously disappears. His line is quite interesting, since he himself declares that he pursues his own goals. I would very much like some spin-off about this character, since it would be interesting to know his past, and in general, Minomoto is very charismatic in itself.
Before that story about gameplay, I want to talk about the interface. For me personally, recently he began to play a rather important role. Neo: Twewy Interface is very convenient and stylish: for example, any music that you put can play on the menu, there is a separate tab with all collectible items, which is very convenient for those who want to close the game 100%, and in each tab there is a percentage of complete passage, which is also incredibly convenient. If in the first part I really lacked the intra -game counter of the time and a full list of all collection items, where I could see how much I collected and whether I had a lot left, then the sequel reached the ideal in this regard.
Let’s go on the menu tabs and thus run through some game mechanics.
In the “PINS” tab, you can assign the characters of the badges: each of your team can wear one icon, unlike the original, where NECU could wear several icons at once (more on that, when I will talk more about the combat system). Here you can see the serial number of the icon, its strength, element (ice, fire or wind, for example), current level, its brand, a small video with a demonstration of what exactly this icon is doing and other data. There are also special Uber-digesters that are more powerful than usual, but there is a restriction on how many of these icons can be in your team. Some icons can also evolve in completely different conditions subject to certain conditions.
In the “Threads” tab, you can equip with various clothes and see which boosts to health, attack and other characteristics. There is also a very convenient “Autostyle” button – with its help you can automatically put on your clothes you need for you. Moreover, you can choose what to give priority: a boost to health, attack or protection, for example.
The “Thoughs” tab is divided into notes and “social network”. Notes change from the chapter (day) in which you are now, and there you can see the goals currently at this moment, both main and side. The social network is literally a large network of characters where you can open various bonuses, getting access to the characters, moving through the plot or performing a site quest. If you got to some character, then the bonus can be obtained with the help of friendship points, which are also given for completing side tasks or victory over plot bosses. Bonuses can be completely different: an enlarged assortment in the store, opening a new complexity or the ability to wear another Uber-sign.
The “Streets” tab, in fact, is a Sibui map. All areas are marked here, what noise and which sites can be found in a specific location, as well as shops and restaurants – about the latter in more detail.
Almost all sides-quests, in fact, are divided into two types: “restoration of thoughts” and introduction into mind and getting rid of internal noise. Both of these types are associated with the abilities of two characters from our team: Fret and Nagi. The first can remind people with those thoughts that they have already forgotten: this is served in a mini-game, where it is necessary to collect a simple puzzle by tilt of two stakes in the right direction. Nagi, as I wrote above, knows how to “dive” into the minds of other people who are absorbed in negative emotions. And this is something like a trial where the battle has several phases, a temporary restriction and some additional effects (you constantly get damage, there are more opponents or there are opponents whose won, you will restore health). From the point of view of the characters, the sides-quests are not particularly impressive: there are no particular stories there, except for the whole couple, there are no interesting stories. Personally, I remembered a character who suffered from the fact that everyone considers him a girl because of a specific voice, and in the end, during another quest, he was noticed by a local celebrity, the prince, and he received recognition, thus organically completing his line of recognition of recognition.
There are quite a lot of things in the “Reports” tab: there is a collection of everything that is in the game in general, and the encyclopedia of all the noise, and the menu with chapters, from where you can move on any day and go through it again, and the wall with graffiti.
The collection indicates all the collectible items that are in the game: documents, music, badges, clothes and food. In the section with clothes, you can even see what exactly is missing: hats, T -shirts or watches.
Noise encyclopedia or, as it is called in the game itself, Noisepedia, is a list of all noise with concomitant information. Health, the amount of experience given for erasing this specific noise, weakness to the elements and other indicators is shown on the right. And below are specific icons that fall from this noise, the level of complexity and the percentage of the drop on each: on each of the difficulties with a certain chance, certain icons fall from a specific noise.
In the chapters you can not only choose any day for visiting, but still see. What are the quests on this day, additional tests or pigs-shums. These are very small trials in which it is necessary to defeat the noise-guns in a certain way: to wash only noise of a certain color or icons with a certain element, because they do not react to any others at all. These are small, but interesting puzzles, where sometimes you have to think quickly.
The wall of graffiti is probably the most interesting. Graffiti here plays the role of achievements: they are given for performing certain actions in the game, and they can be placed on a large multi -colored wall (and anywhere and at any angle). But the most interesting thing is that all the graffiti that you posted are displayed in the game in the location of Udagawa Backstreets next to the very graffiti Kat. It would seem that this is a detail that not everyone will notice, but it becomes nice that the developers decided to confuse and made such an interesting variation of achievements.
The combat system in Neo: The World ends with you has undergone significant changes. In the original, it was tightly related to the features of Nintendo DS, and transfer it without breaking anything, it is almost impossible (we remember the final remix). The authors of the sequel acted smarter: they transferred the mechanics, while adapting them to the usual control for modern platforms. As I said above, each character can wear only one icon, and each icon is assigned a certain button (X, Y, L, R, ZL and ZR). What is convenient, one button can be assigned to several icons at once: for example, you press X, and several characters make an attack at once.
The game still gives space for experiments and creating interesting ligaments. For example, one hero with a powerful jerk for a couple of moments neutralizes the enemy, then the second hero connects with his near attack, the third hero sets fire to the floor under the enemy, and the third and fourth attack from afar. If you often manage to get a timing and make a combo, then the Groove scale is replenished. In fact, this is the scale of your supernomer, which has three “levels”. When it reaches 100%, you can use a strong blow (for example, a large fiery ball falls from the sky to the arena), when reaching 200%, the same super -receiving is used (I note that the reception is not one, they depend on the elements of the icons that you used in the battle), but it is stronger and more strong. And when the scale is filled to the limit, it will be possible to use the ulta: the heroes take off and attack opponents from a bird’s height of a bird’s height. Not only is it a very effective technique, especially against bosses, but even at the end of your health is completely restored.
Now – about bosses. Unlike the first game, I still passed. I really like the bosses in it: they are moderately complex, and the battles with them are a small puzzle that will need to be solved, because some attacks can apply a lot of damage, and you have to think about how to dodge them.
For example, closer to the final of the game was a boss who brought me some problems. I just couldn’t go through it (especially his “dying” attack, which instantly killed my team), and I could not even understand what the problem was: either I did not pump enough, or I was fighting somehow wrong … It turned out that I had to change my icons: the near attacks were useless, but the long-range were very effective. As a result, I gave the whole team to the whole team with a long -range attack, and after a few attempts the boss was defeated.
The final boss turned out to be really excellent: it was large, colorful and moderately complicated. And because of this, the final looked truly grandiose and significant.
You also need to talk about the complexity that on Twewy is also a separate gameplay mechanics. You can very conveniently configure the level of the challenge you need. Firstly, there are 4 difficulties in the game: Easy, Normal, Hard and Ultimate. As I said earlier, different icons fall on every difficulty, so such a large number of them are justified. In addition, you can lower your level to any value to also increase the drop drops, increasing the factor. This is especially useful in the second passage, when even on the complexity of Ultimate all enemies are winning literally in a couple of moments. Such a flexible setting of complexity allows you to configure the game for yourself and play the way you want, with the right level of challenge.
It is impossible to say about The World Ends with You, do not touch the soundtrack. Surprisingly, but, in my opinion, music in Neo: Twewy was even able to surpass the original. In addition to many new, memorable compositions in the soundtrack, there are also remixes of the original tracks, which have become even better. And if earlier there were many tracks from Twewy in my playlist, now they were almost completely replaced by the soundtrack of the sequel. If we evaluate it in general, then the tracks became more heavy (which is even cooler for me), and because of this it became easier to distinguish: some are so unique that they can be guessed by the first chords.
Music, as I already said, can play the menu, and the one you yourself put, if you, of course, bought CDs in special stores (there are only a couple in Sibuya). But, in addition to all this, the authors came up with another mechanics tied to music. Some time after meeting with a bat, Rindo appears a jerk – a new, much faster way to move around Sibu. Moreover, if you make jerks to the beat of the music playing against the background, you will turn out something like a new remix, where another new tool was added. Sometimes it sounds strange, but sometimes really unusual versions of new tracks are obtained. In addition, moving in this way, you can not only get to your goal faster, but also gain up to 20% of the Groove scale, which is also useful.
As I wrote above, it is very convenient to collect collection objects in Neo: Twewy, since they are all shown on the menu, and the percentage of the passage or execution of one or another part of the collection is shown everywhere. The game has one more activity: Secret Reports. These secret documents, which clearly came from the Kingdom Hearts series, are needed in order to explain those moments for the disclosure of which there was no time or there was little. And I am not at all against this: on the contrary. This encourages the player to explore the game, but only if he knows about it. In Neo: Twewy, the ability on the social network simply opens: in the early chapters, that is, days, strong blue noises appear. The fact that victory over them gives secret notes invaluable for Laura is silent. In my opinion, it was either more accurate to say that blue noises are not another boring activity, but a really important element of postheim, or give one secret document on the plot (for example, in the final) so that the player generally finds out what they are (for example, it was in Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep). Basically, it seems to me that even a guide is not particularly needed for the most complete passage, but the game will still have to go twice so that everything is.
Despite the shortcomings that I indicated in the review, Neo: The World ends with you is a great game, beautiful Jrpg. And despite the fact that Twewy was not needed, Neo: Twewy is one of the best sequels that we could get. The game not only did not deteriorate in comparison with the original, but in some way even became better. This is a very unique and even original game in comparison with other modern large releases, and I personally very much advise you to play it (demo version can be downloaded for free, so forward). It is even possible that it is with this game that you can start acquaintance with the series, and then, if you like it, you can try the game with Nintendo DS. The game, despite the large amount of the fanservice, still copes quite well in order to present the old characters of the new audience.
But this review of the dilogy does not end there: it remains to see remasters who went out on mobile devices and Nintendo Switch, as well as an anime and a small episode with Twewy heroes in Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance. On this wonderful note, I wish you good luck and a good day!
